Ph.D. student Mohamed Bahloul got a new journal paper accepted at the IEEE Open Journal of Engineering in Medicine and Biology (OJEMB). OJEMB covers the development and application of engineering concepts and methods to biology, medicine and health sciences to provide effective solutions to biological, medical and healthcare problems. In their accepted work Professor, Laleg and his student Mohamed Bahloul developed a new two-element fractional-order Windkessel model to assess the aortic input impedance. The model comprises a resistor, Rp, connected in parallel to a fractional-order capacitor, C_alpha, accounting for the peripheral resistance, and the total arterial compliance, respectively. Results and analysis in this work indicate that fractional-order impedance yields a powerful tool for a flexible characterization of arterial hemodynamics.

For the last couple of years, Professor Meriem and her team have been working on developing a novel quantum-based method for signal and image processing. She introduced the concept during her Ph.D. This method allows the decomposition of the signal/image into set of functions given but the squared eigenfunctions of a semi-classical Schrodinger operator. We named the method SCSA for semi-classical signal processing.

Promising results have been obtained in the analysis and post-processing of biomedical signals.
You can test the 1D SCSA: https://lnkd.in/eZh-dJE
(Big thank to the Senior Ph.D. student Abderrazak Chahid, who helped in preparing the software).

Ph.D student Mohamed A. Bahloul has been selected to atteind the 13th IEEE-EMBS International Summer School on Biomedical Imaging which will be held in Saint-Jacut de la Mer, Emerald Coast, Brittany France, 14-21 June, 2018. Founded in 1994, the IEEE EMBS International Summer School on Biomedical Imaging has become over the year the worldwide reference in the field and is proud of his 500 alumni. It is resolutely international (around 45 participants from more than twenty countries have participated to the previous editions) and accessible to young scientists. It is an open yet privileged place for exchanges and discussions of major on-going work. Informal and warm, at a location where the sea and the land merge in a time varying relation, this school brings together, every other year for ten days, the world’s greatest researchers and teachers in biomedical imaging. The participants are PhDs, post-doctoral students, engineers from industry, and already involved in some area of biomedical imaging.

Congratulation to W. Cai et al for their paper accepted in the 2nd IEEE Conference on Control Technology and Applications which will be hold in Copenhagen, Denmark, August 21-24, 2018.
In this paper authors propose a robust H-infinity approach for free space optical (FSO) beam pointing error systems. First, a deterministic discrete-time model for pointing error loss due to misalignment  is presented. This model  considers detector aperture size and optical beam width. Then, the control problem that guarantees the stability of the closed-loop pointing error and the attenuation of the  disturbance is investigated through a robust H-infinity  control framework. Finally, simulation results of the FSO link under the effects of a controlled weak turbulence condition are performed to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed robust pointing error approach.

Doctoral student Zehor Belkhatir continues her excellent work. She got a IEEE Control Systems Letters accepted, last January. In this letter Zehor et. all proposed an estimation algorithm for the characterization of multiple point inputs for linear fractional order systems. First, using polynomial modulating functions method and a suitable change of variables the problem of estimating the locations and the amplitudes of a multi-pointwise input is decoupled into two algebraic systems of equations. The first system is nonlinear and solves for the time locations iteratively, whereas the second system is linear and solves for the input's amplitudes. Second, closed form formulas for both the time location and the amplitude are provided in the particular case of single point input. Finally, numerical examples are given to illustrate the performance of the proposed technique in both noise-free and noisy cases. The joint estimation of pointwise input and fractional differentiation orders is also presented. Furthermore, a discussion on the performance of the proposed algorithm is provided.

Prof. Meriem will be giving a talk at KAUST-NSF Research Conference on Environmental Monitoring: Foundations and Applications, organized held in KAUST on November 6-8, 2017.

Talk: Towards Sustainable Smart Desalination Systems

The rising population around the world is placing increased pressure on the already limited natural freshwater resources. To satisfy rising demands, many countries rely on seawater desalination to meet their fresh water needs. However, alternatives to the conventional energy intensive thermal desalination methods have to be developed for a sustainable future. Membrane distillation (MD) is an example of emerging technology for sustainable water desalination. In this talk, Prof. Meriem presents feedback strategies that help in optimizing and controlling the MD process and also designing algorithms to automatically detect performance deterioration such as fouling.

The accepted paper will be presented by Abderrazak Chahid at the 13th IEEE BioCAS, to be held on October 19-21 in in Turin, Italy. Abderrazak will present a new adaptive enhancement method for Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) image. The new method is based on adaptive selection of a filtering parameter by a grid segmentation of the noisy input image. The preliminary results provides very encouraging insight and show good potential in MRI noise removal while preserving the small details.

The accepted abstract will be presented by Abderrazak Chahid at the 34th Annual Scientific Meeting ESMRMB 2017 CONGRESS, to be held on October 19-21 in Barcelona, Spain. Abderrazak will present the results of his work on water suppression technique. The novel proposed method is based on the Semi-Classical Signal Analysis (SCSA) of the Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (MRS) in vivo. The MRS signal is usually dominated by the water peaks, 1000 times stronger comparing to other signals of interest, which limits the detection and quantification of the small metabolites.

The accepted paper proposes an on-line estimation algorithm of the source term in a first order hyperbolic PDE is proposed. This equation describes heat transport dynamics in concentrated solar collectors where the source term represents the received energy. This energy depends on the solar irradiance intensity and the collector characteristics affected by the environmental changes. Control strategies are usually used to enhance the efficiency of heat production; however, these strategies often depend on the source term which is highly affected by the external working conditions. Hence, efficient source estimation methods are required. The proposed algorithm is based on modulating functions method where a moving horizon strategy is introduced. Numerical results are provided to illustrate the performance of the proposed estimator in open and closed loops.
